At Tina Brown’s recent Women in the World Summit, the Ethiopian model and maternal health advocate Liya Kebede wore an asymmetrical knit blazer from the Proenza Schouler fall collection (shown here) that takes tailoring into chic new territory. A new crop of spring jackets is smartly cut and softened with playful touches, demonstrating that serious needn’t be humorless. Vicki von Holzhausen was an award-winning automotive designer working for Audi and Mercedes-Benz before she turned her hand to making accessories. “Great cars are beautiful, memorable, meant to last many years and even become more valuable as they age,” Ms. von Holzhausen said. “I think that’s a good way to look at fashion.” Now based in Malibu, she designs direct-to-consumer handbags that possess an ineffable California cool. The shapes are minimalist, and details like meticulously painted edges and handles made of leather cording tied together in knots are stellar. What better complement to a luxury car?

Alala Leggings: For Your Thighs Only
Two years after introducing her Alala activewear label, Denise Lee is adding a customization feature for her best-selling Captain leggings with sheer panels behind the knees. There is a choice of seven colors for the top panel, nine for the bottom panel and seven for the mesh inserts, offering hundreds of options for customizing workout tights that are uniquely you. Expect delivery in four to five weeks. A heat-transfer monogram is also available. At SoulCycle or Y7 — who knows? Special tights could give you the push it gave Ms. Lee, who was inspired to start the label when training for her first triathlon.
