No, Kylie Jenner did not ‘start’ wigs

Kylie Jenner is causing an uproar again, and this time it’s over her (fake) hair.

As one of Marie Claire’s five May cover girls, the Kardashian sister/model told the magazine, “I started wigs, and now everyone is wearing wigs. Kim just used my wig guy last night . . . I just do whatever I want to do, and people will follow.”

The comment provoked immediate social media outrage, with many quick to throw shade on the seemingly ignorant 18-year-old. Since Jenner obviously doesn’t know her hair history, here’s a look at a few notables who were rocking wigs long before anyone had heard of a Kardashian.

Known for her statuesque beauty, the 69-year-old has been wearing wigs since the ’70s, from her long, hippie tresses in her “Sonny and Cher” days to her disco-era oversize curls. Jenner will have to garner something bigger than just reality fame to reach the iconic status of Cher, but for now, in the words of Loretta from “Moonstruck”: “Snap out of it!”

Tina Turner has been rocking wigs onstage since the ’60s, when she was sure to whip her hair as she belted her hit songs like “Proud Mary,” “Fool in Love” and “River Deep.” And on her last world tour in 2009, the now-76-year-old’s statement hair piece was still front and center and beautifully adorned. Jenner, it is obvious you love a good mane, but if homage is not shown, what’s love got to do with it?

Country singer Dolly Parton has been breaking the rules since the late ’70s and ’80s, and she always pushed the envelope when it came to her look. Not one to apologize for her larger-than-life hair, the 70-year-old never leaves the house without her blond feathered wig and heavy makeup, saying in 2003, “I hope people see the brain underneath the wig and the heart beneath the boobs.” Clearly, being a country music legend is not a “9 to 5” job.

Besides being known for hits like “Lady Marmalade” and her sold-out sweet potato pies, the 71-year-old singer is also a purveyor of wigs. LaBelle debuted a line of wigs in 2008 for the “Especially Yours” collection, which started with 10 styles with price points starting at $49 for synthetic hair and $99 for premium human hair and grew into a variety of styles and colors for the young and old. We’re sure that LaBelle would be more than happy to school the young Jenner, if you asked her to.

Since her Motown days, this Detroit native has tried every hair look from a big afro to long, sleek tresses, showcasing her mane fashions in her concerts and films like “Mahogany” and “Lady Sings the Blues.” So Jenner, “do you know where you’re going to?”

Rapper Lil’ Kim took her wiggery to the next level when she appeared in her 1997 “Crush on You” video sporting rainbow-colored locks in red, blue, yellow and green. As a known friend to the Kardashian family, it looks like Kim, 40, will have to have a sit-down with baby Jenner the next time they meet. Because as Kim has previously stated, she has no time for fake ones.
