FEMININITY BEYOND STEREOTYPES, IN THE COLLECTION BY CHOU YUN TING

A fashion collection isn't just the expression of a designer's voice. Behind it there's a life story, experiences and emotions. With her graduate collection Chou Yun Ting, a young Taiwanese fashion designer out of Shih Chien University, speaks of the inequality women face in a chauvinist society.

In Taiwan, as in many other countries, being a woman can be harder than it is elsewhere. Even as a firstborn child, Chou has always had an inferiority complex with regards to her male counterparts, accompanied by a sense of shame and non-acceptance of her femininity.

Her reaction is a protest in the form of a fashion collection. Her garments weaves together masculine and feminine until making the distinction disappear. Soft and hard coexist: delicate knits and rigid patterned fabrics are combined into a collection that is hybrid, androgynous, unisex. Beyond any possible gender stereotype.
