WILD, EXPRESSIVE AND CHIC: "DER KLUB DER WILDEN MALER" BY MARIE-SOPHIE BEINKE

To capture an atmosphere and transform it into lines, shapes, colors and finally, garments. Inspired by expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German artist belonging to the Brücke group, fashion designer Marie-Sophie Beinke presents her graduate collection "Der Klub der wilden Maler" (the club of wild painters) at the Royal Academy of Antwerp.

Drawing and painting have always been a passion of the German designer. As are the creative processes that transform these arts into fashion. For this collection, Beinke takes her cue from the painting of a forest by Kirchner, an artist who at the time was influenced by Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Munch, but also by primitive art from Africa and the Pacific isles, which he transferred to Alpine landscapes.

Kirchner's work inspires the color palette and shapes of the collection. Geometric elements such as circles and triangles are in strong contrast with organic brushstrokes. Free painting is combined with abstract forms, blended together so as to create graphic tension.

Another recurring theme of the collection is traditional menswear, from the classic suit to the kimono, in addition to artisanal construction techniques.

A collection, the designer explains, dedicated to all the artists who dare to think differently, wild philosophers who have to courage to express themselves.
